Be very, very careful. We’re entering the world of the strange and new here.

The Big Ten is all about Saturday afternoons, tradition, the magic of a crisp October day when most of the upper-middle part of the country is focusing on the big schools playing the big games.

Welcome to Big Ten conference play football in August on a Thursday night.

There might be 15 games on the big Thursday night to kick off a massive weekend of showdowns, but this one actually matters as much if not more than anything else that’ll go down.

Florida State vs. Alabama? Interesting. Michigan vs. Florida? Important. Texas A&M vs. UCLA, NC State vs. South Carolina, West Virginia vs. Virginia Tech? All spicy, to varying degrees.

But Ohio State vs. Indiana is Big Ten East football. And if Indiana somehow pulls off the upset, it’ll be the biggest story of the weekend, no matter what.

The Hoosiers are welcoming back former coach Kevin Wilson to Bloomington, but now he’s in the offensive coordinator role with the Buckeyes. That’s going to be a factor.

IU gets the national stage against the No. 2 team in the country. That’s going to be a factor.

The last win over the Buckeyes? 1988.

Ever since a 32-10 win in 1951, the Hoosiers have come up with two wins – 1987 and 1988 – and two ties in the series. That’s going to be a factor.

And Ohio State being really, really good again is going to be a factor.

When last we saw THE Ohio State football team, it getting blown away 31-0 by THE eventual national champion, Clemson. With Oklahoma coming up next, the last thing the team needs is a crisis of confidence with a clunker in Bloomington.

One Reason Why Ohio State Will Win

Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers. Yeah, most of the stars from the 2016 Ohio State defense are gone to do bigger and better things, and that includes the ball-hawkers in the secondary like Malik Hooker, who seemed to be a magnet for the big play.

Indiana might have a ton of experience and a whole lot of good offensive weapons, but it also has to prove it can stop giving the ball away.

As good as IU will be on both sides of the ball this season, none of it will matter against the better teams if there are the same turnover issues like there were last season.

OSU defensive coordinator Greg Schiano will continue to drive up the pressure early on, and the ultra-athletic new parts to the Buckeye defensive puzzle have all the upside in the world to keep taking the ball away.

One Reason Why Indiana Will Win

Don’t laugh, but Indiana actually has the right team in place to pull this off.

The Hoosiers might not have the depth, and they certainly don’t have the skill, speed and talent of the Buckeyes, but before getting forced out for his various sins, Kevin Wilson had the program in one of its best positions in a long, long time.

The defense returns nine starters, led by an outstanding group of veterans in the back seven – Tegray Scales just might be the best linebacker on the field.

The receiving corps is dangerous enough to be a problem for the Buckeyes, and the line has the ability to get physical against an amazing OSU line that’s about get slugged in the mouth.
